Background
I was born in Australia in 1945 and studied at Melbourne University.
My parents fled from Nazi occupied Poland just before the Second World War and lost all their relatives in the concentration camps. This blighted our lives, but I was curious to see Europe for myself.
In 1967 I went to live in London and began a career as a teacher which lasted for over 20 years. I taught in some of the toughest comprehensive schools, and began writing for myself never thinking of getting anything published.
I wrote stories plays but mostly reviews of the many theatre, concert opera and dance performances I saw.
One day a friend said "Why don't you publish them?" To my surprise, the Guardian liked them and I became a Critic (capital C.)
In 1995, I began to get itchy feet and travelled all around Australia which made it even worse so in 1996 I went to Zambia as a volunteer teacher. The rest, as they say is history.
I have been in Africa ever since, writing, teaching and most of all learning.
My two daughters live in England - one of them has a baby daughter.
